Nervous System Reset; all the rage

I just ordered a flash card set of 75 nervous system reset techniques and I’m really excited to dive in!
Fads come and go in the wellness industry, but all the talk about the nervous system, the vagus nerve involvement with that system, and how to, essentially, chill ourselves out is very “in” right now and I think, these concepts are here to stay.
It’s a lot to unpack; stress response, daily work-life balance, healthy sleep hygiene, diet, exercise routines for long life, neuro-hacks for better muscle engagement or to relieve chronic pain… it can seems like so much, where do we start ?? The health of our nervous system encompasses a lot of our daily life activities and goals and regulates how well we preform on a day to day basis. The nervous system plays a role in nearly every aspect of our health and well-being.
I previously was studying up on the polyvagal theory by Stephen Porges and particularly got turned on to a book called Accessing the Healing Power of the Vagus Nerve by Stanley Rosenberg. It’s rather technical, which is right up my alley, but I was also craving something a bit more simplistic and accessible to the everyday reader. I’m also really into watching instagram videos on the topic (maybe too much) and have been loving the neurological focused “brain-tricks” to reduce pain, shift perception and feel more into our body; I love making those brain to body connections. I studied yoga for many years and KNOW that it has positively influenced how I move through the world, how I hold my body and how well I can release tensions and even experiences.
I’m fasciniated with this topic, so I bought Vagus Nerve Deck by Melissa Romano.
Her 75 card exercises pack breaks it down into categories she labels as: Vitality, Calm and Connection. Each one working to balance the Dorsal part of the ANS, the Sympathetic part, or the Ventral Vagal system respectively. Very simple, easy to read and follow, which is exactly what you need in times when you are, quite frankly, feeling a bit lost.
I’m excited to try them out. For example, the one I opened to first is GARGLING. This stimulates the vagus nerve and helps to regulate heart rate, digestion and stress response. On the back she goes on to describe how to do it. In summary: Use room temp water, sip water and hold in your mouth to start, gargle (attempt for 30 sec.). Take another sip and repeat, spit out the water after each gargle. Repeat until you’ve gargled for 90 sec to 2 minutes. Would you try?
Ask me about the deck on your next visit and you can pull one, or two! I’m happy to try them out together, building connection is always wise.
